What is CBD oil? - The Hemp plant is a strain of cannabis sativa species not the same as the marijuana plant but in the family. The hemp plant contains a high level of cannabidiol (CBD) and only trace amounts of THC (regulated to 0.3%) Hemp CBD is not psychoactive and will not get you high.

HEMP CBD oil is very different from hemp seed oil. The so called snake oil salesmen out there in the marketplace selling hemp seed oil that contains no CBD are to be avoided. Hemp CBD is found in three different forms Full Spectrum - Broad Spectrum - and Isolate if a product says “full spectrum” that means it does contain 0.3% THC which if taken internally could cause you to fail a drug test but if used topically will not as topical use never enters the blood stream.

From Harvard Health Blog Cannabidiol (CBD) — what we know and what we don’t:

The evidence for cannabidiol health benefits

CBD has been touted for a wide variety of health issues, but the strongest scientific evidence is for its effectiveness in treating some of the cruelest childhood epilepsy syndromes, such as Dravet syndrome and Lennox-Gastaut syndrome (LGS), which typically don’t respond to antiseizure medications. In numerous studies, CBD was able to reduce the number of seizures, and in some cases it was able to stop them altogether. Videos of the effects of CBD on these children and their seizures are readily available on the Internet for viewing, and they are quite striking. Recently the FDA approved the first ever cannabis-derived medicine for these conditions, Epidiolex, which contains CBD.

CBD is commonly used to address anxiety, and for patients who suffer through the misery of insomnia, studies suggest that CBD may help with both falling asleep and staying asleep.

CBD may offer an option for treating different types of chronic pain. A study from the European Journal of Pain showed, using an animal model, CBD applied on the skin could help lower pain and inflammation due to arthritis. Another study demonstrated the mechanism by which CBD inhibits inflammatory and neuropathic pain, two of the most difficult types of chronic pain to treat. More study in humans is needed in this area to substantiate the claims of CBD proponents about pain control.

Why full spectrum hemp extract with CBD is superior to CBD alone:

From Frontiers in Plant Science ‘The Case for the Entourage Effect and Conventional Breeding of Clinical Cannabis’

In animal studies of analgesia, pure CBD produces a biphasic dose-response curve such that smaller doses reduce pain responses until a peak is reached, after which further increases in dose are ineffective. Interestingly, the application of a full spectrum Cannabis extract with equivalent doses of CBD eliminates the biphasic response in favor of a linear dose-response curve such that the botanical extract is analgesic at any dose with no observed ceiling effect (Gallily et al., 2014).

In layman’s terms, this means that higher doses of CBD isolate alone may be less beneficial than smaller doses. However, if these same doses are given with the whole plant in the form of a full spectrum hemp extract, then higher doses of CBD actually translate into greater therapeutic effects. There are so many questions about CBD pain cream and cbd oil balm floating around out there, we thought we would take a minute to answer the more commonly asked questions here!

Can CBD Oil Penetrate Skin?

CBD infused balms, lotions, and salves do not enter the bloodstream when applied topically. The first layer of human skin (the epidermis) has low permeability, so the CBD in any topical products will not penetrate far enough past this barrier to reach the blood vessels.

Does CBD ointment improve skin disorders?

A recent study concluded that The topical application of CBD ointment is a safe and effective non-invasive alternative to improve the quality of life in patients with some skin disorders, especially those that are inflammatory.

Common inflammatory skin conditions include dermatitis, eczema and psoriasis.

the study was done in Italy by three general surgery specialists at the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia Medical School found based on skin evaluations (Hydration, TEWL, elasticity), and supported by photographic data that “topical treatment with CBD-enriched ointment significantly improved the skin parameters, the symptoms and also the PASI index score. “

Does CBD Help with Back Pain?

Research indicates that CBD may reduce back pain by:

  • Reducing inflammation 1

  • Combating anxiety, often associated with long-lasting or chronic back pain 2

  • Helping with sleep and improving overall state of relaxation 3

According to an article from CBD-infused lotions are considered topical because they are applied to the skin. CBD-infused creams and gels are absorbed by the skin, which makes them a good solution to back or neck pain, and they have been shown to reduce inflammatory and neuropathic pain.

Does CBD Lotion show in drug tests?

  1. Research on CBD and Drug Tests: In a study published in the "Journal of Analytical Toxicology" in 2017, researchers investigated whether the use of CBD-rich hemp products could lead to positive results in urine drug tests for THC. The study found that using CBD-rich hemp oil or CBD isolate did not cause THC-positive results in standard urine drug tests.

  2. CBD Isolate vs. Full-Spectrum CBD: Another study published in the "Journal of Pain Research" in 2018 compared the effects of CBD isolate and full-spectrum CBD. The study indicated that pure CBD isolate would not cause a positive result in a drug test for THC, but full-spectrum CBD products containing trace amounts of THC might result in a positive test.

Always ensure that you use CBD products from reputable manufacturers and verify the THC content through third-party lab testing. Additionally, if you are concerned about drug tests, consider discussing CBD use with your healthcare provider.
